Hong Kong March 2006 A massive thanks to all who toured to Hong Kong and contributed to a fantastic 4 days of rugby-mania. Firstly, my congratulations go to the U16s squad which was made up of 20 players broken down into U15s and U16s. Both these teams won their respective groups and therefore met each other in the Cup final. A massive achievement, especially for the U15s who beat the very confident U16s from Bangkok Lions in their group. Centaurs U16s prevailed in the final and brought back our first trophy from this event. We will be back in force next year to retain that trophy and add more to our cabinet. The U14s fought incredibly hard and almost won their group but narrowly lost (by 1 conversion) to Hong Kong Football Club which put them into the Bowl semis. Unfortunately they were unable to reach the heights of that HKFC match and missed out on progressing. The U12s did all that was asked of them in their group but came up against a HKFC first team that was drawing players from other teams because their main players "were ball-boying at the HKFC 10s!!!!". Although they lost this match they still progressed to their Cup semis but lost to a very strong Valley Fort (HK) side. The U18s on paper were very strong but just didn't pull it together on the day and finished 4th of 5 in their group, winning 1, drawing 1 and losing 2. They had the beating of at least 2 teams above them and they know that when they return next year they'll be in the running for some silverware. The dinner Thursday night at the HK Cricket Club saw 140 Centaurs players, parents and siblings eating, drinking and participating in Scott Ashby's 'Court Session' where a number of players (and parents!!) were 'fined' for their on and off-field antics. An excellent evening! The rest of the weekend went like clockwork......with England winning their 4th successive HK 7s and Wales winning the Plate. China rounded off the Northern Hemisphere domination by claiming the Bowl. (Apologies to all those Southern Hemispherians.....but we don't get the chance to gloat often.....and I'm sure tables will turn in Singapore and beyond....!!!!). And finally I'd like to say a big "thank you" to everyone who toured; the players, parents and siblings for making it another awesome weekend of rugby in HK. Also, a massive thanks to Rebecca Methley for all her hard work organising the trip. To Scott Ashby and Chris Bracey for coaching and managing the U16s and U18s. To Chris Lowther and Kevin Hazlett for assisting the aforementioned coaches. To David Bromley and David Docking for running the U12s and Martin Phillips and Ashley Morris for guiding the U14s. Thanks guys! And finally, congratulations must go to Pete Williams and Iain McMullen (U12s and U14s coaches) for being selected to represent Singapore at the HK and [probably] the Singapore 7s. But commiserations on finding the going pretty tough in HK. We wish you much better luck at the Singapore 7s. To those who couldn't tour......we missed you! Here's to more great rugby! |

Bangkok February 2006 The U14s were our standard bearers this year and were very worthy winners of their cup and are now eager for Hong Kong. Marc Nelson was awarded the best and fairest award of this age group....not bad for a second rower but his hard running, made the team many metres over the day. The U12s won all their group matches but were unlucky to lose in the dieing seconds of their cup final. Their heads hung low afterwards but this can only toughen their resolve and should bode well for their approach in Hong Kong. The U8s looked to be cruising to the cup final but long matches (8 minutes each way compared to U16s with 7 minute halves!!) did them in and they seemed to blow up early but did win their plate. The U10s had the hardest task of all as they arrived with two teams entered but 3 fewer players than had been expected. So many of the boys were involved in at least 8 matches each.....a tough ask in hot, humid conditions. They also had to play contested hooking in the scrums - something they'd never tried before! Nonetheless, they battled hard against fresher opposition and came back with their Plate too. We only had 10 players for the U16s (they could not afford any injuries), a squad comprising U15s, 16s and 17s and although they battled exceptionally hard they succumbed to better drilled opposition. Again, we are taking 2x U16 and 1x U18 teams to Hong Kong and with strong squads we are hopeful that results will be reversed. Centaurs Teams Final Standings - |
